Monteverde, Costa Rica, in brief
This guide is about Monteverde in Costa Rica, not the places of the same name in Italy or Uruguay. The area is known for its cloud forest, where mist is part of the daily weather. Most visitors stay in or near Santa Elena, the town with the restaurants and bars, and go out from there to the reserves and parks.
Two reserves share the forest: the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and the Santa Elena Reserve. They are run separately, with different opening hours and booking rules. Two private parks, Selvatura and Treetopia, sell hanging bridges, ziplines and exhibitions. Treetopia is the former Sky Adventures Monteverde. The center of Santa Elena is not the entrance to any reserve, so check the way in before you go.
This site is an independent travel guide. It is not run by a reserve, a park, the municipality or the tourism board, and it does not sell tickets itself.

Visiting the Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve
The reserve is also known as the Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve, and its day hours are 7:30 am to 4:00 pm. Park at the visitor center and take the free shuttle, because private cars may not drive up to the entrance. For the current Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve entrance fee, use the reserve's booking page, since advance booking is recommended.

Getting to Monteverde in autumn 2026
The roads matter more here than in most places. Status as of October 2026.
New bridge at Guacimal
The transport ministry reported on 29 September 2026 that a new two-lane bridge on Route 606 is open. It has a separate walkway and connects the Interamericana Norte with Monteverde. It replaces the earlier one-lane crossing.
Roadworks on Route 605
Work on 14 km between Laberinto, Sarmiento and Guacimal began on 11 August 2026 and was planned for three months. It may still affect trips in October. No closing hours have been published.
By bus or shuttle
The public bus from San José costs 3,885 CRC each way at the regular fare, and trip times are reported at 4 to 6 hours. A shared shuttle takes 4 to 5 hours and is listed at $50 to $60 per person.
By car
From the airport at San José the route runs via Routes 27, 1 and 606 and takes 3 to 3.5 hours. Route 606 is winding and partly paved, so plan to arrive in daylight.
Getting there →Before you travel
Basics from Costa Rica's tourism board.
Entry
You need a valid passport and proof of onward or return travel. Whether you need a visa depends on your nationality, and the length of stay is decided when you enter.
Money
The currency is the colón (CRC). US dollars and common credit cards are widely accepted, but a small operator or a bus may not take them, so keep some colones.
Departure tax
The airport departure tax of $29 per person is included in most flight tickets. Check your ticket before you plan to pay it at the airport.

Planning the days
To visit the Monteverde cloud forest, book a timed entry to the reserve first, because it is the part that can run out of space. Then fit the flexible parts around it: a self-guided walk in Santa Elena needs no reservation, and bridge, canopy and farm tours have fixed daily departures.
A ticket at a private park covers only the activity you choose. Bridges, ziplines and exhibitions are priced separately, and Selvatura adds 13% tax and fees to its listed prices. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed on any walk. Pack a rain jacket, because umbrellas are not allowed in the Monteverde reserve. See weather and seasons for what to expect and where to stay for hotels near Monteverde and the areas to choose from.
A cloud forest in Costa Rica: what to expect
A cloud forest is a forest that sits in the mist, and in Monteverde the cloud comes in from the Caribbean side over the Cordillera de Tilarán, according to the Santa Elena Reserve. Mist can hang over the trees even on days without rain, so the dry season does not promise a fog-free walk.
Pack a rain jacket and shoes that grip on wet ground, because umbrellas are not allowed in the Monteverde reserve. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed on any walk, so treat a bird or a mammal as a bonus.
Monteverde, Costa Rica: frequently asked questions
Is this about Monteverde in Costa Rica?
Yes. This guide covers Monteverde in Costa Rica only, with the cloud forest reserves, the private parks and the town of Santa Elena. It does not cover places called Monteverde in other countries.
Which reserve should I visit?
The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve works well if you plan ahead, since it uses timed entry and a shuttle from the visitor center. The Santa Elena Reserve is simpler on the day, with self-guided visits and no reservation. Many visitors do one or the other, and some do both on separate days.
How do I get from San José to Monteverde?
By public bus (about 3,885 CRC regular fare), by shared shuttle ($50 to $60 per person is listed), or by car in roughly 3 to 3.5 hours from the airport. Bus times are reported at 4 to 6 hours. Check the current timetable before you go.
Is the new Guacimal bridge open?
Yes. The transport ministry announced the new two-lane bridge on Route 606 on 29 September 2026. Separately, work on Route 605 started on 11 August 2026 and was planned for about three months, so ask your hotel or driver about the current state of that road.
Do I need to book in advance?
For the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, yes: advance booking is recommended and tickets at the site depend on free space. Guided walks at the Santa Elena Reserve need at least one day of notice. Curi-Cancha guided tours require a reservation. Self-guided visits in Santa Elena do not.
Is this the official Monteverde website?
No. This is an independent travel guide. It is not operated by any reserve, park, tour operator, the municipality or the tourism board, and prices shown are those published by the operators in October 2026.
