Visiting the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve
The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is one of two cloud forest reserves near Santa Elena in Costa Rica. It is not the same as the Santa Elena Reserve, which has its own entrance, tickets and rules. Plan the visit around the reserve's booking system, because arrival and entry work differently from a place where you simply walk in.
The reserve is open for day visits from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm. A night walk runs outside those hours. Private cars cannot drive up to the entrance, so you park at the visitor center and ride a shuttle. This page is an independent guide and is not run by the reserve.

How entry works
Visitor center, shuttle and timed slots.
From the visitor center to the entrance of the Monteverde reserve
The Monteverde cloud forest visitor center lies about 0.9 miles (1.5 km) below the entrance. Free parking and a free round-trip shuttle are provided there. Private vehicles may not go all the way to the gate, so do not plan on driving to it.
Arrive 15 minutes early
Be at the visitor center 15 minutes before your booked time slot. A late arrival does not guarantee entry.
Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve tickets and booking
Booking in advance is recommended. Tickets at the site are sold only if there is free capacity. The ticket price is set by the reserve and can change, so check the current price on the booking page for your date.
Cancellation
If you cancel at least 48 hours ahead, you get a full refund. If the reserve cancels because of weather or safety, it offers a new date or a refund.

The three loop trails
Distances and times for the Monteverde cloud forest trails, as published by the reserve.
| Trail | Distance | Time | Level | What you pass |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essence Trail | 0.9 miles (1.4 km) | About 1 hour | Easy | Cuecha waterfall |
| Heart of the Forest | 1.7 miles (2.8 km) | About 1.5 hours | Easy to moderate | A hanging bridge |
| Continental Divide | 2.5 miles (4.1 km) | About 2.5 hours | Moderate | A hanging bridge, dwarf forest, lookouts |
For a Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve hike with one morning, the Essence Trail or Heart of the Forest fits. The Continental Divide trail is the one to choose if you want the longest walk. The hanging bridge on these trails is part of the reserve. The big bridge parks are separate, and the page on hanging bridges in Monteverde compares them.
About the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve
The reserve is known in Spanish as the Reserva BiolΓ³gica Bosque Nuboso Monteverde, and the operator's own visitor pages call it the preserve. That is why you will see the same place listed as the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve and under other close variants of the name.
The Monteverde cloud forest location is near Santa Elena, but the center of Santa Elena is not the reserve entrance. The way in leads through the visitor center, and the day visit is open from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm.

Monteverde reserve tours: guided walks and the night walk
Besides the trails you can walk on your own, the other Monteverde cloud forest activities are two guided programs. Both are in English and limited to 10 people.
Each Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve tour is a small group. The Natural History Walk takes about 2.5 hours and includes specially guided sections. The Night Walk also takes about 2.5 hours and runs after the day visit closes. Check the time slot and the meeting point in your booking confirmation. Sightings of animals depend on luck. No guide can promise a particular species.
Other places run their own night tours, including private farms. The night tour page compares the options with times and prices.
What to bring and the rules
Mist and rain are part of a cloud forest day.
A rain jacket, not an umbrella
Umbrellas are not allowed in the reserve. Wear a light rain jacket and shoes that grip on wet ground. Mist can sit on the forest even on days without rain. See weather and seasons for the wider picture.
Stay on the marked trails
Keep to the paths, walk quietly and follow the guides' instructions. Respect the wildlife and keep your distance from animals.
Do not count on a sighting
Monteverde cloud forest animals come and go. Bring binoculars if you like birds, and treat any sighting as a bonus.
Allow time for the shuttle
The ride from the visitor center and the walk to your trail add to the time on your ticket. Do not book a canopy tour or a bus right after your slot ends.
Monteverde reserve or Santa Elena reserve?
Both protect cloud forest, but a visit works differently.
| Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve | Santa Elena Reserve | |
|---|---|---|
| Day hours | 7:30 am to 4:00 pm | 7:00 am to 4:00 pm |
| Reservation | Recommended, timed slot | Not needed for a self-guided visit |
| Arrival | Visitor center, then free shuttle | Own entrance |
| Adult entry, 2026 | See the booking page | 10,000 CRC self-guided |
| Guided walk | About 2.5 hours, up to 10 people, English | About 2.5 hours, up to 10 people, 20,000 CRC |
If your days are fixed and you like certainty, book the Monteverde slot first. If your plans are loose, Santa Elena lets you decide on the day. Many visitors pick one and spend the other day on a canopy park or a night walk.
