Monteverde weather at a glance

Monteverde in Costa Rica lies in the Cordillera de Tilarán, where mist drifts in from the Caribbean side. That mist is part of why the forest is called a cloud forest. It also means the weather on the ridge can differ from the weather in the lowlands.

Costa Rica's tourism board describes the Pacific side of the country in seasons. These are regional seasons for the whole Pacific side, not a forecast for the ridge. They tell you what to expect in general, and the forest can still be misty or wet in any month.

Monteverde seasons by month

The regional pattern from the tourism board, and what it means when you plan a day.

MonthsRegional seasonWhat to plan for
December to MarchDry seasonDry spells are more likely. Mist and a few showers can still reach the forest.
AprilTransitionConditions shift toward the rainy season. Pack for both.
May to OctoberRainy seasonPlan outdoor activities for the morning. Afternoon and evening showers are more frequent.
NovemberTransitionConditions shift toward the dry season. Pack for both.

The tourism board also groups activities on the Pacific coast more loosely, with a dry period from December to April and a green period from May to November. Those two blocks are a travel rule of thumb, not an exact start and end date of the rains where you will be.

Rainy season in Monteverde

From May to October rain is more common, mostly in the afternoon and evening. Mornings often give you the best window for the reserves, the bridges and the zipline. Book the early slot when you can.

The seasons also change roads. If you plan to drive, read our page on getting to Monteverde. Route 606 is winding and a shuttle operator advises against driving it at night, which matters most in rain and mist.

Forest trail in the Santa Elena Reserve

Dry season, mist and wind

The dry season does not guarantee a walk without rain or mist. The Santa Elena reserve describes persistent mist from the Caribbean side in the Cordillera de Tilarán, so a dry season day can still bring mist. Bring a light rain jacket in every month.

Keep your dates flexible if you can. The Monteverde reserve recommends booking ahead, and it refunds in full when you cancel at least 48 hours before. Santa Elena asks for at least 1 day of notice for guided walks. That gives you room to move an outing to a clearer day.

The tourism board also notes stronger trade winds in July and August, a period known in the region as the veranillo. Strong wind is one reason a zipline operator may cancel, so ask the operator on the day.

What the weather means for your activities

Operators set their own rules, and these examples show why you should check on the day.

Ziplines

One zipline operator lists heavy rain, a thunderstorm nearby and strong wind as reasons to cancel. Tours do not run in every weather. See the zipline page.

The cloud forest reserve

Umbrellas are not allowed in the Monteverde reserve, so take a rain jacket instead. If the reserve cancels for weather or safety, it offers a new date or a refund. A full refund also applies if you cancel at least 48 hours before.

Hanging bridges

Selvatura's bridge trail lists opening 365 days a year from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Check weather notices on the day. See Selvatura Park.

Closed shoes

Zipline operators require closed shoes. Choose shoes with grip for forest paths.

Evenings and night walks

Showers are more frequent in the afternoon and evening, and night walks run after dark. Start times listed by operators range from 5:30 p.m. to 8:20 p.m., depending on the walk. Wear a rain jacket and closed shoes, and ask the operator whether the walk goes ahead in rain.

Operators describe the animals you may see, but nothing is guaranteed. Details and prices are on the night tour page.

Best time to visit Monteverde

No single month is best for everyone. Match the season to what you want.

  • You want the most dry spells: December to March is the regional dry season. Still pack a rain jacket, because the mist stays.
  • You like green scenery: May to November is the green period. Do your outdoor activities in the morning.
  • You are flexible: April and November are transition months, so you will meet both kinds of weather.
  • You plan to zipline: choose morning slots in the rainy months and ask about wind in July and August.

Before you book a place to sleep, read where to stay in Monteverde.

Monteverde temperature: what to expect and what to wear

This page gives no monthly temperature figures for Monteverde, because the tourism board describes the seasons for the whole Pacific side and not for the ridge. The ridge sits in mist from the Caribbean side, so the air there can feel different from the lowlands.

Whatever the month, pack a light rain jacket and shoes that grip on wet paths, and remember that umbrellas are not allowed in the Monteverde reserve.

Checking the Monteverde weather forecast

Look at the forecast for your dates, then ask the operator on the day. A zipline operator may cancel for heavy rain, a nearby thunderstorm or strong wind, and the Monteverde reserve offers a new date or a refund if it cancels for weather or safety reasons. An early slot gives you the best chance of a dry window in the rainy months.
